God of War, Spider-Man see the most nominations for 2019 DICE Awards

God of War took home a Game of the Year award at Geoff Keighley’s Game Awards show in December, and the Cory Barlog-directed game is poised for another huge win at the 22nd Annual DICE Awards next month. The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) revealed the full nominations list today, and the Sony Santa Monica hit leads with a total of 12, including Outstanding Achievment in Story, Outstanding Achievement in Game Design, and Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction.

Despite all the praise and success (over 5 million sold in the first month), Barlog remains humble as ever. He still gives all the credit in the world to David Jaffe and ranks the original God of War above his own entry in the franchise.

Insomniac Games’ incredible Spider-Man, which has sold 9 million copies, is right on God of War’s heels with 11 nominations — meaning at the end of the night, Sony published games are likely to dominate the awards show. Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 also could pick up several wins with eight nominations, and indie title Return of the Obra Dinn also is faring quite well with six nods. Overall, 56 games received a nomination for the DICE Awards.

“I would like to thank the Academy’s peer panelists who dedicate their time, energy and expertise in evaluating and selecting the best games from 2018,” said Meggan Scavio, President of the Academy of Interactive Ars & Sciences. “To all the finalists – congratulations in continuing to push the boundaries of creativity, storytelling and technical innovation. I am looking forward to celebrating your achievements at the 22nd Annual D.I.C.E. Awards with our members and Board!”

The DICE Awards will take place at the conclusion of the DICE Summit. The show will be livestreamed when it starts at 8PM PST on February 13. During the show, co-hosted for the third year by Greg Miller of Kinda Funny, and Jessica Chobot of Nerdist News, Bonnie Ross, Head of 343 Industries (which oversees all of Halo at Xbox), will be honored with an induction into the Hall of Fame. Ross is only the second woman to enter the Hall of Fame, and she talked with GameDaily at length about women in games and her efforts to expand the Halo universe.
